Hey Minnesota! Spring is here and like most Minnesotans were waiting on those gorgeous Lilacs to BLOOM! When we first moved into our late 1800's village home my wife was thrilled! So many trees and so many mature lilacs!! But soon thereafter we realized...our lilacs had hardly any blossoms. With just a little love and care we were able to prune the bushes and promote LOTS OF NEW BUDS TO GROW!! Now our lilacs are looking FULL & GORGEOUS!! Our whole yard & home are filled with their sweet fragrance come that very much anticipated time in May!
So what's the trick to producing lots of gorgeous blooms? Well it's really quite simple. The most important thing to know is that THE BEST TIME to trim lilacs in Minnesota is as soon as the blossoms start to fade. Lilacs produce the next season's buds almost immediately, so if you prune too late you may be sacrificing the next years blossoms. Also mature lilacs should be pruned regularly, every year. This will keep them producing lots of those fragrant blossoms each spring!
